PLACE 2006-2010

“Place” is a collective work that was produced by Gözde İlkin and Susane K. Willand for the exhibition "Topkapı" in Spedition Bremen, 2006.

“Place” was a mobile space created for the immigrants who transfer their customs and cultures by means of the objects and the stories that they brought with them. The objects and the stories carried during the immigration were drawn and hand-stitched on the handkerchiefs.
“During the creation process, we focused on the objects that may represent the distance, the journey such as handkerchief, tent etc. The images we embroidered on the handkerchiefs were of the objects referring to dreams, cultural codes and traditions, fears due to displacement-immigration and making it possible to feel safe in a foreign place.

The inside of the tent is formed of the handkerchiefs on which the images collected from Turkey are embroidered, as to the outer surface, it is formed of handkerchiefs embroidered with the images collected from Germany. The portable tent was arranged as a recreation site for the audience.

In 2010 the handkerchiefs stitched on a curtain and showed in the exhibition Cityscale, Lothringer 13 Munich.
